Transformers of this type are used in the steel melting and metallurgical industry. They are characterised by high secondary current(for steel up to 90 kA and for ferroalloy upto 160 kA electrode current) and a wide secondary voltage range. The secondary voltage is normally regulated by an on - load tap changer (OLTC) located in the high voltage winding or in an intermediate circuit of a two-cored design within the transformer tank.

Application

  • A scott-T transformer is used to convert 3 phase AC to 2 Phase or vice versa
  • Applications of this are voltage regulators or cost reduction for short distance 3 phase transmission
  • Using it for a voltage regulator you could run the 2 phase output through an inductor or capcitor and resistor branch to get a single phase indicative of all three phases of a generator.

Hermetically Sealed Corrugated

In hermetically sealed transformer, pressure variation due to oil expansion & contraction is absorbed by the flexible corrugated steel tank(variable volume tank design), where by the maximum operating pressure remains at only a fraction of the usual. Transformers are always shipped completely filled with oil and sealed for their lifetime. Bushings can be exchanged from the outside draining the oil below the top of the active part.

The cover is equipped with a filling pipe which is high enough to ensure a safe oil filling level in the insulating elements at all times for the bushing.

Hermetically sealed Transformers are used in high humid environment, where there is limitation of maintenance services and there is a confined space condition such as package or compact substation units.
